Disappointing turn-out for the “Citizens” 4th of July fireworks.

After hours of preparation and thousands of dollars spent, only a few hundred people  ended up showing up to the small Fourth of July event.   Looking around the baseball stadium just before the show where the fireworks show was to take place, it felt like less than half the seats were filled.  The show seemed weak and anti-climatic – almost something you could put together with your neighborhood friends.

This is especially disappointing due to the large number of people who appeared to be interested in setting up a second fireworks show.  Over 4000 people registered for a group online called “Keep the 4th of July on the 4th” but with only a few hundred actually showing up for the event, it’s become evident that the majority of those were people interested in watching the controversy rather than interested in the group itself.  This makes sense when diving deeper into the facebook page and seeing that only about 130 people have signed the groups official petition.

Discussion on the facebook page has died off over the last week – even before the event took place –  and only 5 people out of the 4,000 have commented anything on the fireworks since the show.    The group is now talking about organizing to continue with the multi-day celebration next year – even though the main fireworks show will already be held on the fourth of July.  This has some people questioning the logic or real purpose of of the group – if they will be having a fireworks show on the 3rd or 5th of July next year when the original purpose of the group was to protest that very thing.  But with the poor showing this year, the mediocre event for the thousands of dollars spent, and the lack of even less interest next year, raising funds for such an event will be an uphill battle.

Yeah, I thought there’d be more of a turn out after all the buzz this got on the news. But it was still a nice evening out with my kids. They like fireworks no matter how big or small.

Why was the number disappointing? After all a lot of people did show up.

“– almost something you could put together with your neighborhood friends.”

Perhaps that’s the point. It was a show put together by neighborhood friends.

i think her point was that it was suppose to be this big event and it was a let-down.

I think they need to realize that this is the internet, and waaaaay more people will hold virtual signs and throw virtual stones than will actually do something.

I’m with you Wendy Jo, they should be happy with the turnout they had. Any event usually takes time to ‘take hold’ and get big turn-outs.

According to the Post Register today there were a lot of people in the park outside the stadium and in the streets around it. One of the cops was quoted as saying they were shocked by how many turned out in the park.

I think they are wanting a two or three day celebration. What is the point of that. There is already so much going on at the greenbelt

I so wanted to attend the 4th’s fireworks show, but was unable to do so.
After moving here 5 years ago, one of the things that bothered me the most about this town was this very occurence – celebrating freedom from “religious dictatorship” on the wrong day, primarily because of local religious beliefs.
It is unfortunate that the meaning of this holiday (as with most holidays, regardless of one’s like for them) has been lost somewhere along the time, fading away as commercialism, bright lights & dazzle, tacky t-shirts and decor, and the ever-present grease-laden funnel cakes dominate our special days. *sigh*
