Staggered Opening of Lift Service DH MTB Trails to Begin Today
Grand Targhee Resort will begin opening partial sections of their lift-serviced downhill mountain bike trails today, and plans to be close to 100% open by the weekend. “The abundance of late season snow and variable weather throughout the spring delayed us a bit this year,” said Andy Williams, Summer Trails and Special Events Manager at Grand Targhee Resort. “We know local and regional riders are chomping at the bit to start riding our downhill trails and we’re excited to get them open this week.” Downhill trail openings will start today and include the Grand Traverse and Upper Sticks and Stones. Upper Sticks and Stones is a black diamond trail and for expert riders only. Both trails connect to the Teton Vista Traverse (a mountain service road) offering options for expert and intermediate riders. Trails will be well marked with signs to indicate what is open, and when riders are requested to walk their bike due to trail conditions. The skills park at the base area is also open, and accessible from the base area by riding up the mountain road (Teton Vista Traverse), or from the lift-accessed Sidewinder trail or Teton Vista Traverse. Designed for beginners and low level intermediates, the skills park offers a variety of features to allow bikers to practice specific skills, including log ramps, berm turns, a teeter totter, logs, a rock garden, narrow low-level ladders and some smaller progressive jumps. Grand Targhee Resort expects to have the majority of its downhill mountain bike terrain open by Friday, including Upper Sticks and Stones, Upper Buffalo Drop, Lower Sticks and Stones and Lower Sidewinder (from weather station/Teton Vista Traverse down). A small portion of the Upper Sidewinder Trail located in 4th of July bowl will remain closed due to snow depths. On the map below, the trails in blue will open today and the trails in green will be open by Friday, July 9, 2010. The portion of Sidewinder that will not be open is not highlighted, and is located on the map underneath Mary’s Saddle.
