Sunday Soccer League Trashes Field Weekly!!!

      David Beckham - Snot Rocket

The Hispanic Soccer league plays on the field behind my house, and every Sunday they leave their litter everywhere. I am sick and tired of the mess.  Other teams/leagues play and have tournaments and never leave the field this way.  Our neighborhood is tired of it.  I walked over to a set of trash cans on May 2nd during a game and one had an empty box with a few Beer cans and the other held 5 Beer cans!   Beer/alcoholic beverages are illegal in the park, but we end up with bottles and cans in our yard and we don’t drink!   We have also seen grown men urinating on the trees by the fields because they wouldn’t walk to the bathroom–not a pretty sight at all. We have also had players steal water out of our hoses. If something isn’t done to stop this, our neighborhood will petition to get the games stopped.  The City sends workers to clean up after the mess on Sunday evenings (at the Taxpayers expense! And yes, I have proof of this with pictures and a police officer witnessing it as well).  I have tried to get this issue resolved over the past few years and nobody in the city I have contacted seems to care. Those of us who love in the Village do care.  Kimi McCall

I would think they could get far by starting to fine the league? Then the league would crack down on those causing the mess? Have they tried that?

I would think there’d be some sort of ordinance they could back it up with.

If you see persons consuming alcohol during the soccer games or practices, call the police and report their actions. Illegal behaviors are different than legal incidences.

Littering is illegal, but the city might consider a certain amount of trash to be expected with the crowd drawn by such sporting activities. However persons invading your property to use your outdoor water facilities, drinking alcohol where it is prohibited, and voiding outdoors in public is illegal; call the police.

Their nationality does not matter, their actions are illegal.

At the chance of being branded intolerant, these people in general care about no one but themselves. I hope you get the matter resolved. They have no respect for anything, and thus need to treated accordingly.

You could find out who runs the soccer league and voice a complaint with them. They could pass it along to coaches and players that if the behavior and excessive trash continue, further action might be taken.

Soccer is a real integral part for some cultures, and I’d like to see your neighborhood try and work it out first with their leaders before taking permanent steps.

I lived just north of the soccer fields in Rosewood Acres in the late 90′s and noticed the Sunday league would turn the fields into little Mexico.

Cars parked all over the grass, taco stands set up on each end of the field, and garbage strewn everywhere. On Mondays the aftermath made the whole complex look like the Bonneville county dump on a windy day.

The real problem lies with the sport of soccer in general. It’s the most un-American activity since the fondue’ party. Do you see this kind of crap at Grid-Kid football games? The solution is simple, ban soccer in the United States and make it a felony to own a soccer ball.

Lets keep foreign games in foreign countries where they belong and convert the soccer complex to the Idaho Falls Football Arena for Real Americans.

Or I guess we could just call the cops and make sure the Sunday league abides by the rules and cleans up after themselves…but that isn’t a very dramatic solution.

I often attend the Latino League games. I’m not positive, but I don’t believe the League, which is run through the YMCA, has even started yet, though I’m sure that there are many teams scrimmaging.

I share your frustration with the mess – in the past I’ve called Idaho Falls Parks and Rec and asked them to increase the number of trash cans available, because, especially during the heat of the summer, they get full very quickly with plastic bottles. When Parks and Rec added cans in convenient spots, the amount of trash on the ground went down dramatically. Since there can be as many as 1,000 players and fans out on Sundays, there needs to be adequate facilities.

Of course the city should have workers cleaning up – but it’s not at “taxpayer expense” – at least not entirely. That’s part of what the league pays for when it rents the fields. As long as it’s not excessive, that should be a non-issue. If the fees aren’t covering the costs, City Council should raise the fees.

You’re absolutely right about the urinating outside. Early in the season, the city didn’t always open the restrooms, even when games were scheduled and paid for, but by now I’d expect them to be open full time. (OTOH, I’ve seen teenaged boys doing it during the spring and fall leagues, too).

The police have been very good about ticketing cars parked on the grass, and pretty good at enforcing the ban on alcohol. Alcohol happens in Tautphaus, Freeman, and Community Parks, too – and of course alcohol is more likely when adults are playing than when the 13- and 14-year-olds are there. But the vast majority of Sunday League players are drinking water or a sports drink – they cramp up if they’re dehydrated. Spectators are, in my experience, more often the culprits. That’s also the case for other leagues – I’ve seen empties on the spectator side after youth games, too. Unless the consumption leads to inappropriate behavior, it’s pretty difficult for the leagues to enforce.

And Rhonda: if by “these people” you mean the people who enjoy soccer at the complex on Sunday, you’re dead wrong. They care about each other, their families, and their community as much as anyone I’ve ever met. And they care passionately about great soccer!

oh believe me by ‘these people’ i wasnt refering to the fans of soccer. I actually love soccer, but i’m not one of the ill bred people who lack culture, and simply dont know how to behave.

      Dear Mr. Worly,
Turning a legitimate issue into a racial blast as you have so sarcastically done in your comment is unhelpful. This is not the intention of the original writer’s article. I am sure the author would similarly complain if a college basketball league or a private wedding company held weekly events in the park and left such a mess behind. Unfortunately, the comments that you have made attempt to paint the author as a racist, which is unfair. People, any people, should be called out and held accountable for this behavior no matter what group they represent.

There is also the constant problem of various hispanic gangs flying their colors at these matches which invariably leads to fights and the police having to be called. Some summers I’ve seen that they actually have to post police as security. Its time to shut this league down until they make their spectators behave. As someone else said its not the players who are the problem, its the fans.

The picture wasn’t posted by the author but by the website. And the comment about locked bathrooms and more trash cans is bunk, the bathrooms are open and the trashcans are there and empty with trash lying all around them, the only trash they throw in the cans are beer bottles.

I passed by there on Saturday, there were hundreds of people there, and wow there were a lot of cops around too! I counted five police patrol cars just as I was driving through entering the Village subdivision. Glad there was not trash left everywhere this week…it’s good that we have that facility in our city, there were a lot of kids playing and having a great time outdoors.

I hope who ever runs the league reimburses the city for the expense of having to have so many cops present.

I’d rather the cops be there instead of waiting to catch people driving 6 miles over the speed limit down 17th street. Why would anyone reimburse the city? Cops always congregate where large crowds gather. ie: beerfest, fireworks show on the 4th and a dozen other events throughout the year.

The reason there was no trash this last weekend is because the hispanic league wasn’t playing, there was a big regional meet in town, the police were there to keep people from dying trying to cross Broadway until they get a light put in this summer.

I’m in charge of Latino soccer league that plays on Sundays , and I agree with some of yours comments.
About people do not care and live trash around the trees, houses and urinating by the fence ,Because is unsanitary for every body .
But is hard for us to keep the spectators under control we have enough just with the players during The games and just to let you guys know we have rules for the players and spectators but is more about behavior during the games not for all the people around the houses .
I would like to invite everybody to help us solve the problem if you see anybody doing something Wrong such like drinking or urinating under the trees or by the fence call the police rigthaway and I would guarantee that all those People will stop.
We are paying like anybody else to use the field and I play in the others league and I see problems to but I think some of the comments are racist just because we are Hispanic . and those comments does not help anything just make thing words
I know we had some problems not just with trash and behavior but I thing we improve a lot from before in different ways we will keep working to make everybody understand the rules.

Marlon – bravo for coming on here and posting your thoughts. I hope the league can continue, as I hope any sporting league does for us or our kids. Let’s just get the bad apples at all of these events, white or hispanic, called out on their behavior and things will go more smoothly. You are all forgetting the massive amounts of trash after the 4th of July events at the falls, Shelley spud days, the fair, etc. which many are responsible for – not one group.

      23 Anonymous May 19, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Thank you for coming on here Marlon but there is a simple solution to your problem with fans. Your league needs to hire off duty cops to be security. The cops will be there in uniform and will do what is needed to control the crowd. This is common practice for our cops as they frequently provide off duty security to hispanic dances, quincieras, etc. In case you haven’t noticed our cops are a little busy – three recent murders, a stabbing at the mall last night, and lots of other violent crime that seems to be spiking lately. The ones on duty don’t have time to come and babysit your fans so you guys need to make arrangements for the off duty ones to be there. You merely need contact the department and they’ll get you in touch with the officer who coordinates this.

      24 Anonymous May 19, 2010 at 7:06 pm

The cops that were doing security this last weekend at the non hispanic soccer games were off duty cops working an extra gig. The hispanic league should follow suit.

I would like to comment as a fan/spectator. I also noticed the trash being left after the soccer games on Sunday and on occasion urinating somewhere other then the bathroom. But this is just from a small group of repeat offenders. I think if Marlon can just spread the word to the teams captains and they can pass the infromation to their players and fans.

I have been attending the games as a spectator and I have only seen the police there like twice in the last few years and this was usually during the finale when all of the mometum is built. The crowd does not get out of control and rarely is there any problems with drinking. All of us are there to enjoy a hobby, a past time, or just relax before getting back to work so there is no need for harsh or rude comments. The folks playing out there are from all cultural backgrounds and races. Just as it should be and it is peaceful and enjoyable.

Well, I am Hispanic, and yes I have to admit we are a bit messy. I have gone to the games near your subdivison and I too have seen these men doing a number behind a tree or a car (which the car was mine where he was doing his thing). I confronted him on it and he blurred something and walked away. Anyways, this makes me mad, because those idiots give us other Hispanics bad names. I never have seen my father doing that and nor my brothers. My parents taught us well. In the 90′s I was out there reminding everybody to pick up their trash and I was even out there with trash bags walking around to see who had trash to throw away. I did this and disposed of it properly. I did this so the city officials wouldn’t band us from the complex. But I rarely go anymore because I feel ashamed and bad dirty looks look my way. I do hope their will be a bulletin reminding spectators to clean up after themselves. something needs to be done.

It’s interesting to read how the racial bias of the Idaho Falls residents comes out even when they aren’t aware of it themselves. It seems that Clarence Worly is as uneducated as it gets. Let me guess Clarence, you grew up in Idaho, barely made it through high school and have very close minded views of the world. Keep foreign games out and convert the “soccer” field into a field for “real Americans.” Let me tell you Clarence, I am from a foreign country and have served this country for more than 20 years. Many young man who possessed a green card or were nationalized US Citizens (of course you wouldn’t know what nationalization means) have died so that retarded backward people like yourself can freely live here. I take it that Clarance Worly epitomizes (I know, another word she wouldn’t understand) what pure uneducated white trash is all about. Her comments are another reason why I look forward to leaving Idaho Falls and this very closed minded area of our great nation. I would never want values like this to be passed to my children. Clarance, thank goodness for foreigners in our country who bring diversity and tolerance to all of us.

      Wow!!

I have played in the Hispanic League for several years and can’t believe that so many people do not see the many positive benefits of this league. Yes, there is some litter and an occasional bathroom break. But I have to say, these are not things that I haven’t seen at a high school sports event or other sports leagues in the area. The organizers of this league have done a fantastic job of keeping things in control and should be commended. This league means a great deal to the players and fans, who may I remind you live and work hard in Idaho Falls and the surrounding communities. This sport is something we all love and it is a positive influence. We are thankful for the support that the city provides and the general population attending the games are very respectful. I have never seen any gang activity. There are some flags flown by fans in support of the teams that they represent. But nothing hostile, just true fans. There are occasional scuffles, but that happens in sports sometimes. Many of the players attend church on Saturday/Sunday and live and work in areas that make it difficult for them to play on days other than Sunday. I hope the community will continue to support this league and it will remain a great part of Idaho Falls for many years to come. I am not hispanic, but I have had a chance to get to know many of the players and their families and I must say that I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them.

Okay from the start (The Hispanic Soccer league) the title becomes bias and the comments continue… Other teams/leagues play and have tournaments and NEVER leave the field this way… blah blah blah…… Now I have a little girl that comes with me and yes i agree that if crap like tree watering and fence staining happens that it is wrong! Which brings me to say, Blame the INDIVIDUALS not the entire program or participants ,, quit crying over water and we pay taxes too so we can use these recreational PUBLIC areas and the police probably laughed at you … so can we all just get along???
So in my most humble opinion i say, keep clean all public areas. key word PUBLIC.. and if you really where sick you would have move or created a system that would be more effective. For example fines for indecent exposer or littering yep but no you only compline and do nada. So my team for example pick up and clean after ourselves’ so it is not all but some…. to all the others that made this a racial bias column… Sorry that you ignorance and closed minded attitude fail you in knowing that we are a very very divers sociaty.and much more so as a country. for any feed back or comments responded to bautista1587@gmail.com

I should notice here that calling a Football league (ok, ok, soccer to Americans) Hispanic League or Hispanic whatever is very ignorant. Have you heard of the White Football League lately? Plus, people in this country are quite ignorant about racial issues. The other day I asked a girl if she was Italian and she said: “Oh no, I’m white.” Well, Italians, Spaniards (from Spain), Portuguese, Romanians, are all LATINS, but also CAUCASIANS. So are also caucasians peoples from North Africa, India, and the Middle East. You see, being caucasian does not mean you must belong to the Germanic/Celtic group of human beings only. The term WHITE is misleading and it’s funny to hear the KKK’s definition of what a white person is. Hispanics are considered CAUCASIANS! There are Hispanics white and non-white. When the Spanish conquered most of the South American civilisations: the Aztecs, Olmecs, Toltecs, Mayas, Incas, etc, they brought their caucasian genes to the South American pool thus creating what we call today “Hispanics.” So many comments here about how Hispanics are dirtier. Well, what about the “white” Idaho Falls residents with their weird family customs? I could talk about this all day long. Yes, Latin countries are dirtier than their Germanic counterparts in Europe, but they are also more alive. Families stick together and endure hardship together. They don’t say things like: “My kid is almost 17, time to kick him out of the house…” or similar comments like I hear from typical white Anglo-Saxon Americans. And Latin families know how to enjoy life better than regular Americans. We all have something to learn from them and many do. As a matter of fact this country is great because many Americans realised that gaining knowledge from other cultures is important to making our economy and lifestyle better and more balanced. To Idaho Falls residents? Perhaps not so much therefore we “enjoy” a stagnant homogenous culture that is close minded and unwilling to learn from these “damn foreigners.” The most open minded people I have found so far in this city are the Mormon kids who completed their missions in other nations. They are usually well cultured and able to engage in interesting and intelligent dialogue.

Nice to see racism is alive and well in Idaho Falls. Don’t stop now Clarence, there are many more groups of people you can offend. How about women, children, blacks, baseball players, or maybe even yoga enthusiasts. Your lack of education and ignorance in general is quite amusing.
