Voters now speaking from the grave!

Democrats are sweating the upcoming election this year.  Voters are angry from all sides.  Democrat supporters are don’t think their elected officials in office are doing enough, conservative minded are furious with the rush passing of Obama’s health care bill, and just about everyone is in shock over the rampant spending taking place.

And now even those who have passed on into the next life are “speaking out” and voicing their dissatisfaction in a big way.   The following obituary was printed the Review-Journal on July 13, 2010.  It’s certainly representative of the unease in the air for this upcoming election.  Does this mean we’ll be seeing more political statments in obituaries soon?

CHARLOTTE MCCOURT Charlotte M. Tidwell McCourt, 84, of Pahrump, passed away July 8, 2010, after a long illness. She was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Wellington, Utah, and was a 40-year resident of Nevada. Charlotte held a zest for life and loved serving her family of five children; 20 grandchildren; and 65 great-grandchildren. She had been the wife of Patrick L. McCourt for 67 happy years.

Active in her community, she assisted in many political figures’ campaign efforts. As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Charlotte served as a leader in the Relief Society for over 20 years. She and her beloved husband also served a full-time mission in the Cabanatuan Mission in the Phillipines. Charlotte is survived by her husband, Patrick; children, Pat and Nellie McCourt, Dan and Lanny Shea, Bill and Marsha Sortor, David and Sherry d’Hulst, and Tom and Ann McMullin; and many grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Saturday, July 10, at the LDS Chapel, 921 E. Wilson, in Pahrump.

We believe that Mom would say she was mortified to have taken a large role in the election of Harry Reid to U.S. Congress. Let the record show Charlotte was displeased with his work. Please, in lieu of flowers, vote for another more worthy candidate.

Is this really an appropriate thing to do in an obituary?

I guess it’s level of appropriateness depends on the feelings of the deceased. If she felt that strongly about the subject, then I guess it’s ok, and the only people it should matter to is the family anyway IMO.

It is interesting that this fine woman was a mormon, and if I am not mistaken, so is H. Reid. I feel as strongly about Ried as Mrs. Mccourt does. My condolenses to the family. She sounds like a wonderful woman.

Sorry. No more of it because

      She’s gone, gone, gone
      gone, gone, gone
and cryin’ won’t bring her back.

I’m just disgusted that a good Irish woman turned Mormon.

1 – Anyone else find the word choice hilarious? I sure do and I have to wonder whether or not it was intentional.

2 – Something I remember from working in the newspaper industry: Obituaries aren’t written by the deceased (usually), and therefore opinions expressed in them are only representative of the author’s perspective. In this case…I’m curious exactly what Reid has done that this particular woman, who apparently campaigned for him, would loathe so much…? If Charlotte was a conservative…well, Reid has been a dem for rather long time. Was Charlotte once a dem and has changed her ways, or what?

3 -I’d say fully appropriate if this is truly representative of how she felt and absolutely not if not – in that case it’s no better than using children to sway political feelings.

4 – I hope we don’t see a whole lot more of this because there is nothing stopping an ardent political sort from inserting his or her own opinion into the mouth of the deceased – and not a thing the deceased can do to stop it..
